Back in April 2024, Gere told Vanity Fair Spain that Homer doesn’t quite understand how famous his father is, as the family doesn’t “go out much” in general.

The Agency actor went on to share that he doesn’t go to premieres or watch his own films, adding that neither his wife nor his eldest son have seen many of his movies.

“He doesn’t understand it,” Gere said when asked if Homer grasps that his dad is a star. “And it is also very difficult for him to see me on the screen because even if I play an extreme character, I am still his father and it is difficult for him to get into the story.”

The father of three added of Homer, “As it happens, he just started acting too. He has suddenly become interested and seems to enjoy it. He’s been writing and directing little movies, so we have this new thing in common.”

Tuesday’s gala in New York City, meanwhile, was hosted by Jason Biggs and featured a live auction to raise money for City Harvest. The event “comes at a critical time as the organization noted that visits to New York City soup kitchens and food pantries are at the highest level on record,” per a release.

“More than 3 million New Yorkers are struggling to make ends meet as they grapple with high costs for rent, food and other necessities,” the description reads. “This year, City Harvest, which helped to start the food rescue movement more than 40 years ago, will redirect nearly 83 million pounds of high-quality, nutritious food for free to hundreds of soup kitchens and food pantries across New York City.”

It’s an event that Gere always cherishes being in attendance for. As he tells PEOPLE, “I can’t remember how many years I’ve been coming to this, but I think it’s one of the most important groups of people in the New York area.”

“The millions of people who are fed by this organization is astonishing, and I’ve seen it grow over the years,” he continues. “The motivation is impeccable. The ability to deliver food to people is impeccable, so I’m very proud to be here.
