Pilot warned he “needed fuel” before Hudson River helicopter crash

A tragic helicopter crash in New York claimed six lives, including Siemens executive Agustin Escobar, his wife Merce Camprubi Montal, their three children (ages 4, 5, and 11), and the 36-year-old pilot. The family had just arrived from Barcelona and were on a sightseeing tour when the helicopter, operated by New York Helicopter, crashed into the Hudson River near Pier 40 on April 10.

The pilot had radioed that the helicopter was low on fuel and was returning to the helipad, but they never made it. Witnesses reported the helicopter “split in half” mid-air, with the rotors detaching before impact. The aircraft was only in the air for about 16 minutes. Photos taken just before the crash show the family smiling inside the helicopter.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. May they rest in peace.
